Man Who Shot His Six-Year-Old Neighbor Released on Bond
Ryan Le-Nguyen has been released on a $10,000 bond after shooting six-year-old Coby Daniel.
A man in Michigan was released on bond Tuesday after an incident involving his neighbor. Ypsilanti native Ryan Le-Nguyen was released from the Washtenaw County jail on a $10,000 bond after he allegedly shot his six-year-old neighbor Coby Daniel. Le-Nguyen has been charged with assault with intent to murder and ordered not to return to his home. On Thursday, after complaints from Daniel's father Arnold, Le-Nguyen was taken back into custody.
"We are glad the defendant is back in custody to ensure the safety of the community," Washtenaw County prosecuting attorney Eli Savit told USA Today. Bail has now been set at $100,000.
According to Arnold, his children were riding their bikes in the neighborhood when they stopped, leaving the bikes in front of a neighbor's home. When Coby went back to get his bike, he said Le-Nguyen came outside with a sledgehammer. He then re-entered his home and fired a gun through his front window, hitting Coby in the arm.
"He tried hitting me with a sledgehammer but that's not going to work because I'm too fast," Coby told Fox 2 Detroit. "[Then he] got a gun and boom, shot me right here."
Arnold said that the family has had issues with the neighbor before, including one incident where he attempted to throw one of his children's bikes away.
Coby Daniel is home from the hospital and is expected to be fine. Doctors told Arnold that had the bullet been an inch in either direction it likely would've killed Coby. That said, Daniel is incensed by Le-Nguyen's release. "I'm trying to figure out [how] he got a bond so low for trying to kill my kid," he said. "Right now, he's not even processing what happened. He doesn’t realize how close he came to not being here..but I realize it. I'm scared for my family because I don't know what he's capable of."
According to FOX 2, the local prosecutor's office said that they were shocked by the low bond, and that they requested $100,000 and filed emergency motion to raise the bond.
