Anthony Weber was fatally shot around 8:30 p.m. in South Los Angeles. Authorities said deputies were called to the area after receiving reports of a young man brandishing a gun, according to a report from CBS Los Angeles. Officers at the scene claimed that Weber had the gun tucked into his waistband before he fled, resulting in an on-foot chase.

Officers ultimately opened fire on Weber when he turned to face them, with the teen struck several times in the upper body.

No weapon has been recovered following the shooting.

Angry and distraught neighbors appeared on the scene following the incident, questioning authorities about what took place. Family and friends of Weber were also angry with how the teen's body was left uncovered for hours after the shooting.

"Weren't nobody shooting back and forth," neighbor Regina Banks said, disputing accounts that Weber shot at deputies first. "They were just shooting."

However, officers claim that someone retrieved the gun from the scene while officers were dealing with the neighbors.

"While waiting for backup, and trying to control the situation, it's believed that somebody may have taken the gun that was in the possession of the juvenile at the time of the incident," Department Capt. Chris Bergner said during a news conference. "…Deputies were pretty articulate in describing specific features of the weapon that led us to believe they did see a gun."

Weber's family held a candlelight vigil Monday to honor Weber.

"I need it to be known that my son was a good son," Demetra Johnson, Weber's mother, said. "He had the biggest heart and was a wonderful father; he has a 9-month-old daughter, Violet, who lights up whenever he walked into the room."
