Lizzo Finally Addresses “Truth Hurts” Songwriting Controversy

UPDATE: Lizzo has now filed a lawsuit against three men who accused her of plagiarizing “Truth Hurts.”

The lawsuit, filed on October 23, is seeking “a judicial declaration” Justin and Jeeremiah Raisen and Justin “Yves” Rothman “did not co-author ‘Truth Hurts,’ and have no right to co-own that work or to share in its profits,” according to a report from Pitchfork.

The lawsuit claims that the Raisens “expressly withdrew any claim to ‘Truth Hurts,’ in writing, in April of this year, and subsequently assured Lizzo, again in writing, that they were making no claims to the work.”

However, the brothers told Pitchfork that neither of them ever signed any paperwork to withdraw their claims to the song.

Mina Lioness has been credited as a writer on the No.1 Billboard Hot 100 song.

Lizzo has officially addressed the ongoing “Truth Hurts” songwriting debacle. In an Instagram post, she shared an official statement on allegations that she stole the phrase “100% that b*tch” by British singer Mina Lioness.

“Truth Hurts” is currently the No. 1 song in the country and has previously spent seven weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Lizzo’s Instagram post breaks down her recollection of the songwriting process for the song. It also clears up the previous allegations from producer and songwriter Justin Reid that she plagiarized a song they worked on together.

Lizzo’s Instagram post read:

“Hey y’all… as I’ve shared before in 2017, while working on a demo, I saw a meme that resonated with me, a meme that made me feel like 100% that b*tch. I sang that line in the demo, and I later used the line in Truth Hurts. The men who now claim a piece of Truth Hurts did not help me write any part of the song.”

Later in the post she also stated that a tweet inspired the meme and that “the creator of the tweet is the person I am sharing my success with.” Lioness recently took to Twitter to confirm that she is now credited a writer on “Truth Hurts.”
