Larry Wilmore Heads To ABC Following ‘Nightly Show’ Cancellation

Although Larry Wilmore‘s Comedy Central show was canceled earlier this year, looks like he has made an upgrade by inking a multi year deal with ABC Studios.

The agreement will see the writer and producer develop his own series for the network, as well as supervise those created by others.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Larry Wilmore back to ABC Studios,” said ABC Studios President Patrick Moran in a statement. “We worked closely with Larry while we were developing black-ish and are looking forward to what’s coming next from this incredibly talented writer and producer.”

“I’m excited beyond words to be back at ABC and look forward to this creative partnership,” Wilmore said in the same statement. “Disney took a chance on me as a young writer years ago and so I’m thrilled to return to the Mouse House. I hope my room still looks the same.”

Prior to moving on over to Comedy Central for The Nightly Show, Wilmore worked with black-ish creator Kenya Barris in its early stages. He also serves as a co creator for Issa Rae‘s HBO series Insecure.

No details are available on the projects Wilmore will be doing through his deal with ABC, but it will surely be worth checking out.

Following the cancellation of The Nightly Show, we had written about how Wilmore’s future was far from over.

“In his departure, we should note a reminder of the challenges black people face in not only bringing their projects to life but keeping them alive,” we wrote. “Wilmore will be alright — he knows so much more now than when he started The Nightly Show — and can hopefully apply that towards his next endeavor in the future.”

This deal is a testament to that, with Wilmore joining a number of other black creatives that have deals through ABC (Shonda Rhimes, Kerry Washington and Viola Davis, to name a few).
