Killer Mike Defends Bernie Sanders From Ta-Nehisi Coates

It’s no secret that Killer Mike is feeling the Bern. The Run The Jewels rapper and noted political activist has hitched his wagon to the presidential nominee in hopes of informing Americans why four years of (another) Clinton is not needed in the White House.

As we are delving deeper into election season, celebrated author Ta-Nehisi Coates just offered his two cents in a published piece in The Atlantic, which elicited a fiery rebuttal from the Atlanta MC. Coates, the brain behind Between the World and Me, argued in his op-ed yesterday that Bernie Sander‘s radicalism and aversion to “government reparations” has failed against the weight of white supremacy.

Coates attempts to point out in his piece that Sanders is hardly a pragmatist when it comes to reparative damages for injuries caused by racist policies like redlining. According to Sanders, whose support from the Democratic party mainly comes from white people, his economic platform would seem to benefit Latinos and African Americans who are disproportionately poor. This belief brings up the point of Coates’ wonderfully crafted piece, “The Case For Reparations,” which was published in The Atlantic for its June 2014 issue.

In it, Coates wrote, “Two hundred fifty years of slavery. Ninety years of Jim Crow. Sixty years of separate but equal. Thirty-five years of racist housing policy.” Those compounding moral debts that America has accrued would mean that whomever takes the White House for these next four years will be held to task to resolve these lingering issues. In Sanders’ case, the idea of reparations in any shape or form is “nil,” which means that he doesn’t want nor believe that the issue should be on any Congress docket.

Coates directly questions Sanders “political imagination,” asking why Bernie is so active against plutocracy, but limited against white supremacy. At this point, you may be wondering how Killer Mike fits into any of this? Well, the Down South juggernaut delivered a Twitter rant, coming to the aid of his newfound political friend against Ta-Nehisi Coates. Pushing back against Coates’s important critique, Mike made it clear that while vehemently in favor of reparations, he believes in standing behind Sanders.
