“I’m not going to let this go,” Karle Robinson said of the incident.

A black Kansas man was placed in handcuffs after a police officer saw him moving a television into his new home.

Karle Robinson, 61, was almost finished with his 12-hour moving day when he was approached by a Tonganoxie policeman on his front lawn and was suspected of being a burglar.

Speaking to the Kansas City Star, Robinson initially understood why the officer might have stopped him, saying that it was late when he was finishing up moving. The 61-year-old offered to get documentation in his home confirming his ownership but the cop instead handcuffed him. Additional officers arrived later and searched for the documents themselves in Robinson’s home. Upon retrieving the papers, the officers apologized and cited recent robberies in the same town as for why they handcuffed him.

“If I’d been a white man, you know that wouldn’t happen,” Robinson told the Star. “I’m being handcuffed right here on my own damn property.”

“They’re thinking I’m stealing,” he added. “I’ve been hearing this for 40 years — getting pulled years, getting pulled over, being searched. I’m not going to let this go.”

Robinson has filed a complaint with the department. But Tonganoxie Police Chief Greg Lawson backs his officer’s actions and disagrees with Robinson’s claims of racial profiling, stating that the cop who handcuffed him was initially alone.

“If I were on that call, by myself, no matter the race of the person, they would’ve been handcuffed,” Lawson said.
