This past Sunday was not only Father’s Day and Juneteenth, a holiday that celebrates the emancipation of slaves in Texas (many of whom were unaware of the Emancipation Proclamation) and the larger South, it was the DC Jazz Fest.

Ravi Coltrane, Bilal, and Talib Kweli hooked up with Igmar Thomas & the Revive Big Band to deliver a performance that beautifully showcased, “the roots of African diasporic sounds, chronicling the story of Black music culture as it has transformed and been transformed by time” as our channel partners over at Team Revive eloquently put it. This year's DC Jazz Fest was a rich and joyful celebration of blackness. The performance's encapsulated and honored, "the compositions and innovators that have perpetuated the heartbeat of modern sound – The Legacy of Black Culture."

Kamasi Washington, the Angeleno saxophonist, who has worked on an array of diverse projects ranging from Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, Stanley Clarke’s Up, Thundercat’s The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam and with Flying Lotusalso performed. Kweli performed two of his classic joints Get By & The Blast while Bilal rocked out to some Howlin’ Wolf songs.
