California Democratic Senator Kamala Harris has announced that she is running for president in 2020. Harris, who is only the second black women to serve in the United States Senate, announced her historic candidacy on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is a symbolic gesture. Her announcement is also a nod to Shirley Chisholm, the first black women to run for president. (She announced her run on January 25, 1972.)

Harris made the announcement in a social media video where she declared that she was going to fight for “American values.” (A clear dig at our current administration.)
Harris will hold her first campaign event in South Carolina on Friday, January 25th. And then two days later, on Sunday, January 27th, she will have a kickoff rally in her hometown Oakland, California.
