John Singleton-Directed BET Series 'Rebel' Will Highlight Black Police Officers
A new series called Rebel is coming to BET. The show follows the story of a police officer who leaves the force following shooting her partner in an attempt to stop him from shooting her brother and a subsequent Internal Affairs investigation. The show will highlight officers of color and their relationship to police violence, brutality, and misconduct. Danielle Moné Truitt will play the lead role of Rebel. The show is described as "a hard-hitting, gritty, complicated and morally ambiguous drama series, featuring many issues ripped from the headlines." The scripted drama will be directed and executively produced by John Singleton. Randy Huggins and Dallas Jackson are also executive producers on the show. The show also stars Giancarlo Esposito (Lieutenant Charles Gold), Mykelti Williamson(Rene Knight), Cliff “Method Man” Smith (TJ), LaTanya Richardson (Detective Traylynn Jones), and Brandon Quinn (Mack). Jill Scott composed the music for the pilot. Rebel is produced by MarVista Entertainment. A while back John Singleton expressed his dismay and frustration with the upcoming Tupac biopic All Eyez On Me. “I haven’t watched it and I refuse to watch it,” Singleton remarked. “I know that they f**ked it up so I’m not even trying to give it any attention.” Read more about it all by heading here. Rebel will premiere on BET, March 28th at 9:00PM ET/PT. Stay tuned for more information regarding Rebel in the coming days and weeks.
