The new year in morning TV is off to a good start.

Hoda Kotb just got a promotion. The morning news anchor will officially be replacing Matt Lauer as the “Today” show’s new, permanent co-host. NBC announced Tuesday morning that Kotb would be co-hosting with Savannah Guthrie.

“This has to be the most popular decision NBC News has ever made,” Guthrie said on the show Tuesday morning, telling Kotb, “You are a partner and a friend and a sister and I am so happy to be doing this.”

“There’s no one I’d rather be sitting next to in 2018 than you,” Kotb said.

After the network fired Lauer in November, Lauer had been filling in.

NBC’s pairing of two women as co-hosts is a departure from the usual man-and-woman morning show formatting. But may prove refreshing in the wake of Lauer’s sexual harassment complaints.

Kotb will also continue her 10-year run as co-anchor of the 10 a.m. hour of “Today” with Kathie Lee Gifford in addition to her new spot in the co-anchor seat.
