Hannibal Buress Rips Bill Cosby Over Sexual Allegations During Stand-Up Performance

If you hadn’t heard by now, Hannibal Buress‘ Thursday night set at Philly’s Trocadero ventured into some heated subject matter, ending in a full-on blast of Bill Cosby in response to the copious sexual assault cases that have been brought against the legendary comedian over the past decade. To be clear, Cosby has yet to be convicted of anything, though he has been accused of drugging and assaulting women as far back as the 1970s. As Buress put it:

“Google ‘Bill Cosby rape’ It’s not funny, that shit has more hits than Hannibal Buress.”

And it didn’t stop there; Buress went in, folks:

“It’s even worse because Bill Cosby has the fuckin’ smuggest old black man persona that I hate. He gets on TV, ‘Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the 80s! I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom!’ Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches.”

Before we start picking any sides here, a couple things have to be made crystal clear: 1) Again, Cosby has yet to be convicted of anything. 2) Buress’ commentary is part of a stand-up routine, wherein you might reasonably say any damn thing that pops into your head if it will get a laugh, and therefore should not be taken as a literal accusation in the same way as, say, an open letter published in the NY Times. It’s worth recalling that Buress has shown respect to the 77-year old comedian on other occasions, once explaining to GQ that the Bill Cosby:Himself special “holds up. All of it is evergreen.”

However, it should be noted that Cosby has been accused by 13 different women in 8 different states and none of those reports have been as well publicized as say, Woody Allen‘s now-generally-recognized status as the creepiest comedic genius the world over. Is it so unbearable to live in a world where Dr. Huxtable is slated alongside R.Kelly and Roman Polanski in this rogue’s gallery…that our brains just don’t process the information?
