The go-go bill needs to clear another council vote and be approved by Mayor Muriel E. Bowser before taking effect.

Go-go could very well become the official music of Washington, D.C.

A bill titled the “Go-Go Official Music of the District of Columbia Designation Act of 2019” was unanimously voted in favor of on Tuesday by the D.C. council, according to the Washington Post. However, in order for the legislation to take effect, it needs to clear another council vote and be approved by Mayor Muriel E. Bowser.

Through the bill, Bowser would also be expected to “design and implement a program to support and preserve, including through marketing, and archive Go-Go music and documents relating to Go-Go music and its history.”

Last year, the hashtag #DontMuteDC came about after complaints were directed at an electronics store that sold and played go-go music. The owner of a Metro PCS store in D.C. was forced to stop playing go-go music from his storefront because of complaints from residents in a nearby luxury condo.

Protests and petitions came as a result of neighbors complaining about how loud the music was. The petition, titled “Don’t Mute DC’s Go-Go Music and Culture,” received close to 65,000 signatures, while a rally of protesters shut down 14th and U streets, with Wale even appearing during the protest.

The store has since been able to resume playing go-go music.
