Gnarls Barkley Were Going To Reunite…But Then Donald Trump Happened

It’s been nine years since we’ve heard a new Gnarls Barkley album, 2008’s The Odd Couple. Although CeeLo and Danger Mouse have both done some good work since that album, we miss hearing the two together.

It turns out we were this close to getting some new Gnarls Barkley music. But a certain — possibly catastrophic — event happened.

Earlier today, Danger Mouse appeared on Zane Lowe’s Beat 1 Show where he was promoting his new project,  a soundtrack Resistance Radio: The Man in the High Castle Album. During the interview, Danger Mouse was asked about a potential Gnarls Barkley reunion.

He had some interesting comments:

“I’ll say this: CeeLo and I have always been in touch and we’ve always remained friends and still do and always have a creative desire. That was a part of our lives that never really felt over and never really felt finished and he and I still do discuss it a lot. So that means there’s never been a potential in my head, so it’s definitely a possibility.”

That’s a particularly fine no-answer. It’s what he said next, when he recalls his last meeting with CeeLo, where things become interesting:

“The last time we saw each other was the day before the election in Los Angeles. And we were supposed to meet the next day and I was like, ‘this thing will be over with by 7 o’clock West Coast time. I’ll see you around 8 or 9 or something.’ I was drinking heavily on a couch by myself staring at the TV at that time. I don’t even know where he was.

Essentially, what he was saying is that he was aiming to meet up with CeeLo, but he was shellshocked after Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. Now there’s a good chance that he was joking. However, WHAT IF HE WASN’T JOKING?

For the record, CeeLo seems like he’s 100 percent on board with a new Gnarls Barkley album. In 2015, CeeLo went on record, saying “We need another Gnarls album and so do the people.’”

Hopefully, the fellas figure things out. And, like always, FDT.
