Legendary Singer-Songwriter George Michael Dead at Age 53
This Christmas, George Michael gave us his heart, as we mourn his lost in what has been a season of sadness. The legendary singer-songwriter has passed away at the young age of 53, according to his publicist who confirmed via statement to the BBC.
Beginning his career back in the early 1980s with the uber-successful band, Wham!, he then would become an international household name after he left the group to start his own solo singing career.
George Michael “passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” his publicist also said. “There will be no further comment at this stage.”
Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in north London, the “Faith” singer sold more than 100 million albums throughout a career which spanned almost four decades. Five years ago in 2011, Michael postponed a series of concerts after being taken to a hospital for treatment for pneumonia. After that, he made a tearful appearance outside his London home and said his condition left him “touch and go” whether he lived. Doctors eventually performed a tracheotomy to keep his airways open and he was unconscious for some of his time in hospital care.
The family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. From us here at Okayplayer, we send our most earnest condolences to George Michael, his family and his friends.
Play “Last Christmas” in his honor and be sure to tell your own close ones that you love them.
