From De La To HiiiPower: Here Are The 5 Top Moments From ONE MusicFest
This weekend, magic will happen, funky vibes will ooze from the speakers as the ONE MusicFest returns to Atlanta, Georgia, bringing the city’s Dungeon Family and Organized Noize with them in a special reunion performance. If you’re a part of the small few who hasn’t seen Sleepy Brown, Goodie Mob, OutKast, Slimm Calhoun or Big Rube perform and put on a show, well, this might be your one and only chance. J. Carter, the brainchild behind the ONE MusicFest, made it possible for the A to witness this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment after those two dope boys in a cadillac celebrated their own 20th anniversary. Now, the festival, which is in its seventh year, will pack the Lakewood Amphitheatre with performances that, in our opinion, will be one of the most impactful moments in all of 2016.
In addition to the history making situation with The Dungeon Family reunion, the ONE MusicFest boasts performances from Ice Cube, Gary Clark, Jr., Erykah Badu, Busta Rhymes and A$AP Ferg to just name a few. With special guests (we see you André 3000) slated to appear throughout the event, attendees will have their work cut out for them on-and-off stage. Thanks to the wonderful Netflix release, The Art of Organized Noize, plus the ATLast concert series — the ONE MusicFest has become the de facto destination for Stankonians looking to fill their pimp cups up with some of that Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. Hell, Cee-Lo Green even said that he would be there, so you know it is going to be one to cross off one’s bucket list.
All in all, while our in-house staff of Okayplayer will be watching the tweets and IG posts for highlights, we’re looking to our extended players to capture the best moments from this weekend’s event. To celebrate the reunion of the Dungeon Family, plus the critically-acclaimed festival — we’ve decided to compile the five top moments from previous ONE MusicFest occasions. If you were there, let us know how it was and if not, well, you’ll want to be there next year!
5. Kendrick Lamar absolutely kills it on stage with a live band.
Cornrow Kenny has quickly — in a short span of years — become one of the most fascinating live performers in hip-hop. The Top Dawg Entertainment superstar had been hitting the festival circuit heavy with his live band, which has played from coast to coast. Yet in 2014, Kendrick Lamar was on the ONE MusicFest bill as a headliner and wrecked shop as only the Hub City MC knows how.
4. De La Soul + Common perform “The Bizness” live for the first time.
These two certified hip-hop legends with classic albums and rabid fans. You couldn’t go no more than five feet without someone being able to quote a bar, an album title or knowing some hip-hop history from this talented quartet. 2010 was a great year for the ONE MusicFest as De La Soul + Common got together and performed “The Bizness” for the first time live on stage ever, making this a top moment of the stellar ONE MusicFest.
