Calls to “Free Max B” may finally come to an end this year. On Monday (January 9), rapper French Montana tweeted that the Harlem native is expected to be released before the end of 2023. The Bronx-raised artist made the announcement while tweeting the incarcerated rapper’s new music video for “Lemonade” from French Montana’s latest mixtape Coke Boys 6. According to French, Max B, legal name Charley Wingate, asked him to break the news that he’ll be released in April.
The ‘Wave God’ has been in prison since 2009 after being sentenced to 75 years in prison on conspiracy charges related to armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault and felony murder. Found guilty of nine of the eleven counts he was charged with, Wingate is alleged to have plotted to rob two men with his stepbrother, Kelvin Leerdam, and ex-girlfriend, Gina Conway, at a New Jersey Holiday Inn in 2006. In 2016, the rapper had his sentence substantially cut to 20 years as part of a plea deal for aggravated manslaughter, per AP. In 2019, Wingate’s sentence was further shortened to 12 years for undisclosed reasons.
“I don’t question my purpose no more. I know what I’m here for,” Wingate told Complex in 2019 about his sentence being reduced. I’ll tell you this: I’m not even trying to make hits. I’m just putting my story out there and I’m just trying to make you feel good. I’m the people pleaser. That music I left y’all, that s*** lasted 10 years. Y’all are still listening to it. This one right here, what I’m about to do, for the next 40 years, we’ll be banging this Max Biggavelli s***.”
