Paterson, New Jersey rapper Fetty Wap was supposed to perform during the first day of Rolling Loud New York. However, the rapper never made it to the stage.
Fetty Wap, real name William Junior Maxwell II, was arrested at Citi Field in Queens, New York on Thursday on federal drug charges. Wap, who was charged alongside five others, is being accused of conspiring to deal drugs throughout the Long Island and New Jersey area. (One of the people who was also charged was a New Jersey corrections officer.)
According to Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, “the defendants transported, distributed and sold more than 100 kilograms of deadly and addictive drugs, including heroin and fentanyl, on Long Island, deliberately contributing to the opioid epidemic that has devastated our communities and taken too many lives.”
According to the legal documents, drugs were smuggled from the West Coast using United States Postal Service vehicles that had hidden compartments.
Fetty’s attorney, Navarro Gray, spoke to TMZ Friday morning about the charges. He told the publication:
“We pray that this is all a big misunderstanding. He sees the judge today. Hoping he gets released so we can clear things up expeditiously.”
These charges come just a week after Fetty released his new album, The Butterfly Effect, the official followup to his self-titled breakout album in 2015. The Butterfly Effect is a tribute to Fetty Wap’s four-year-old daughter, Lauren, who passed away this past summer due to a heart defect.
