Family Of Slain J'Ouvert Victim Tiarah Poyau Raises Over $14,000 For Funeral

The family of a 22-year-old who was fatally shot during New York's J'Ouvert festival, has raised over $14,000 in donations for funeral costs.

In a report from the New York PostTiarah Poyau was killed early Monday morning in Brooklyn by a gunman arrested hours later, after he was found drunk behind the wheel of a car with a missing tire and a broken axle, according to police. The shooter, 20-year-old Reginald Moise, shot Poyau in the eye "at close range" after she told him to stop grinding on her. Two of Poyau's friends were walking ahead of her when they heard gun go off and Poyau's body fall to the street.

Moise allegedly told his friends about the shooting saying, "I think I shot somebody on the parade route. I didn't know the gun was loaded." He then tried to get rid of the weapon at a friend's house. He was ultimately charged with murder.

Poyau was a St. John's graduate student at the time of her death. She had just completed her Bachelor's in Accounting at St. John's, and was continuing her studies to get a Masters of Science at the university. In a GoFundMe page for Poyau, relative Tara Poyau said the family needed time to mourn and money for a proper sendoff.

"These times are difficult for all of us who knew and loved Tiarah," Tara writes. "We need and would love time and space to be together to mourn and remember her for the beautiful daughter, sister, cousin, niece, friend, student, and wonderful human being she was."

Fortunately plenty of people have donated, with the page having raised $14,100 out of the requested $20,000 in two days. Tara has since updated the post with the following: "Thank you all for your support and prayers! We are thankful. We will post updates about a service as soon as we have concrete plans."
