The protesters were a part of a rally for Kiwi Herring, a transgender woman who was fatally shot by St. Louis, Missouri, police officers.

Three protesters were hit by a black Mercedes as they marched in a rally for Herring Wednesday night. Two women and a man sustained minor injuries, while the driver was taken into custody about one block away from the scene for felony fleeing, according to St. Louis police spokesperson Schron Jackson.

However, accounts of how the incident played out have been inconsistent. One witness, Keith Rose, reportedly told the St. Louis Dispatch that the driver had his middle finger raised as he accelerated into the group of protesters, while police said the driver stopped, honked, and attempted to drive around the protesters but some of them surrounded his car and began hitting it with their hands and a flag pole.

This comes only a week after a white supremacist drove his car into a group of counter-protesters in Charlottesville, ultimately injuring many and killing Heather Heyer.

The rally, in which an estimated 100 people participated in, was in honor of Herring, who was killed by police officers after she wounded one of them with a knife. The incident stemmed from Herring being constantly harassed by a homophobic neighbor, which ultimately led to Herring attack the neighbor with a knife. However, Herring's family disputes the cops' account that led to her being shot.

"Kiwi was harassed and executed, and it's a horrible feeling," Crevonda Nance, Herring's sister-in-law said to the Post.
