Senator Mitt Romney delivered a speech today that shocked many Americans.

The Senate has reportedly acquitted President Donald Trump on both counts of his impeachment trial. 

According to CBS, 48 senators including one Republican, “voted to convict Trump on a count of abuse of power.” In total 52 Republicans voted to acquit the acting president. Additionally, he was impeached on the charge of “obstruction of Congress.” 53 Republicans found him not guilty while the remaining 47 senators reportedly voted “to convict.”

As previously reported, the Democrat-led House voted to impeach Trump in December. NPR reports Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky noted months ago it was “inconceivable” that Republicans would turn their backs on Trump and remove him from office. 

In a shocking turn of events, Senator Mitt Romney of Utah voted to convict and remove Trump on the abuse of power count, he also gave a speech on the Senate floor this afternoon speaking in detail about his decision. During an interview with Fox News, he stated, “I do believe he should be removed from office. That’s the vote that I will take in just a short a while.” He is reportedly believed to be the first senator in history to vote to convict in the impeachment of a president of his own party. 

Brad Parscale, Trump’s campaign manager released the following statement:

“President Trump has been totally vindicated and it's now time to get back to the business of the American people. The do-nothing Democrats know they can't beat him, so they had to impeach him.”

In December, Trump was accused of “abusing his power” by reportedly pressuring Ukraine to announce probes into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Notably, a debunked conspiracy theory about inner workings in the 2016 election while wittholding nearly $400 million in congressionally approved military aid to the country was also a part of the conversation. 

CBS also notes Democrats believe Trump was currently attempting to cheat in the 2020 election. He was allegedly seeking to coerce a foreign ally to actively smear his political opponent via the aforementioned probe. The obstruction of Congress was declared when he refused to provide documents during the House’s probe. He also reportedly pressured witnesses to not participate in the investigation.
