Donald Glover officially has a role in Democratic Presidental candidate Andrew Yang’s campaign. In a press release, it was announced that Glover is acting as a creative consultant for Yang.
With that role, Glover is designing merch for Yang, including sweatshirts, hats, and posters. In a press release, the Yang campaign said:
The specialized merchandise embodies the core policies and values of Andrew Yang’s Humanity First platform and future collaborations are expected.
Yang and Glover held a public pop-up fundraiser in Los Angeles on Thursday, December 20th. Not only were Yang and Glover both in attendance but there was also Glover-designed Yang merch, which included hats for $50 and sweaters for $100. The big-ticket item was a sweater signed by Yang and Glover that was going for $1,000.
The sweaters have “1k” on them. That represents Yang’s universal basic income proposal “Freedom Dividend.” This plan would give every American $1,000 a month after they turn 18 (Americans would have to forego other government assistance to receive the $1,000.)
Despite being considered a longshot when he entered, Yang has been a steady presence in the polls: He is polling at 4 percent right now, trailing Michael Bloomberg, who just entered the race. Yang supporters — named #YangGang — tend to be younger and very online.
Glover isn’t the first celebrity to join the Yang Gang. Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo and actor Nicolas Cage as supporters of Yang. Cage has donated to the candidate’s campaign in recent months, according to Elle.
