DJ Premier Lists His Favorite J Dilla Beats, Talks 'Voodoo' Sessions At Electric Lady

The above photo is an artifact. A rare one at that, documenting the coalescence of the Soulquarian movement at the house that Jimi built BKA Electric Lady Studios at the tail-end of the '90s and early '00s.There, the likes of D'Angelo, The Roots, Common, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def,) Erykah Badu and Bilal started something huge with the late J Dilla acting as the spiritual center for their historic studio pursuits, binding them all under one man's immeasurable glow.

DJ Premier, was one of the many moving piece to that puzzle, contributing tracks to many of those records, but most prominently featured as the helmer of D's "Devil's Pie." In a recent interview with Ambrosia For Heads, Preemo detailed his time at Electric Lady, adding some much-needed context to the above photo (left to right: Premier, D, Dilla and Alchemist,) detailing the precise moment that he met Dilla, as well as the decorum of the rooms they sat in together. He even throws in a Prince tale for you Purple patrons of the world (though, Questlove definitely has him beat in this particular department.) Below you will find a list of DJ Premier's favorite J Dilla beats, but you'll have to hit the link to get the full script. Almost ten years since Jay Dee left us and the stories are still flowing in from the masters.
