Major Lazer Tapped as First U.S. Act To Perform At Cuba's Musicabana Festival
It is with pleasure to announce that Okayplayer alongside the good folks at Okayafrica will be the official media sponsors behind this year’s Musicabana Festival in Havana, Cuba.
Starring international superstars Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire, better known as Major Lazer, the electronic/dancehall trio will be one of the first major American acts to play Cuba since diplomatic ties were restored between Washington, D.C., and Havana in July 2015.
The Musicabana Festival will be entirely free to the Cuban public, as tens of thousands of people are expected to flood Tribuna José Martí in front of the U.S. Embassy. In addition to performing, Major Lazer will also meet and greet Cuban music students and share the stage with up-and-coming local DJ talent.
What a time to be alive, y’know, as this marks the first international music festival produced by American and Cuban partners in more than 30 years. The once-in-a-lifetime experience will feature an out-of-this-world multi-genre bill boasting over 25 artists, bands and global DJs. Music legends and muy caliente acts including Ibeyi, Los Van Van, Carlos Varela, Interactivo, Sean Paul and Carlinhos Brown, plus others, are slated to perform.
Special travel packages and VIP tickets will be available for those around the globe who want to attend this historic moment in time.
“Cuba’s music scene is bursting with the same raw talent and energy of decades past,” said Fabien Pisani, founder and festival director of Musicabana. “We are excited and proud to partner with Major Lazer and bring one of America’s top musical talents to Havana this March, helping us launch the Musicabana festival in May. We will make history and build an unprecedented cultural bridge between Cuba, the United States and the rest of the world through the power of music.”
Stay tuned to Okayplayer and Okayafrica for more announcements to be made in the weeks and months ahead as more talent is confirmed.
