Photographer Devin Allen To Release 'A Beautiful Ghetto' Book On June 13
The name Devin Allen should be very familiar to those who are a part of the Black Lives Matter movement. He was the photographer who took the startling picture you see above during the Baltimore protest of Freddie Gray‘s death. From that moment on, that image was plastered on the front page of Time Magazine, making Devin Allen into our generation’s Gordon Parks.
Now, we’re sure he wouldn’t go so far to say that, but in less than two years Devin has become one of Baltimore’s best known personalities. Which is why it is important to note his growth as an artist and as a chronicler of black history. The Baltimore native is set to publish a collection of photographs about his city called A Beautiful Ghetto, courtesy of Haymarket Books, an independent firm based in Chicago that specializes in publications aimed at creating social change.
Set for release on June 13, A Beautiful Ghetto will include “100 of Allen’s black-and-white photos, including the illustration that made the cover of Time,” according to the listing on Amazon.com. Showcasing beautiful black people smiling where you least expect it, battling against swarms of police and resisting racism in numerous ways in America.
Priced at $22.95, A Beautiful Ghetto will also include a foreword by Baltimore author and teacher, D. Watkins. For those in-and-around Baltimore, who want to meet Devin Allen, there will be a book release event at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum on June 17.
