Black Detroit Voters Sue Trump Campaign Over Attempts To Overturn Michigan’s Election Results

The Donald Trump campaign team continues to push for the votes to be rescinded.

On Friday, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund filed a suit in federal court on behalf of three Black voters in Detroit and the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization. The suit stems from recent attempts from Donald Trump to rescind election results from Wayne County, the greater Detroit metropolitan area.

“Central to this strategy is disenfranchising voters in predominately Black cities,” the suit reads. “Repeating false claims of voter fraud, which have been thoroughly debunked, Defendants are pressuring state and local officials in Michigan not to count votes from Wayne County, Michigan (where Detroit is the county seat), and thereby disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters.”

On Friday, Donald Trump met with Republican lawmakers from Michigan at the White House. He made personal calls to the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, who tried to rescind the election results but were blocked by the secretary of state’s office.

After nearly two hours meeting in the White House, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfield simply said in a statement “the candidates who win the most votes win elections and Michigan’s electoral votes.”

“Defendants’ tactics repeat the worst abuses in our nation’s history, as Black Americans were denied a voice in American democracy for most of the first two centuries of the Republic,” the suit continues. “This is a moment that many of us hoped never to face.”

The Michigan board of canvassers will meet Monday to decide on certifying the results. Until then, the Trump campaign is maintaining its poker face. “Every American deserves to know that our elections are conducted in a legal manner,” said Trump’s legal adviser Jenna Ellis. “No matter who they are or where they live. That’s our only goal: to ensure safe, secure, and fair elections.”
