Deray McKesson Talks Black Lives Matter Movement And More With The Breakfast Club

To speak about contemporary activism in America without mentioning Deray McKesson, would be a big mistake. McKesson has been an active voice both on social media and in real life, addressing the Black Lives Matter movement and other social issues, as well as being a part of the protests in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland.

This morning the civil rights activist, protestor and teacher, stopped by The Breakfast Club to discuss a number of topics, including what the Black Lives Matter movement is, Beyoncé's Super Bowl performance being perceived as "anti-police," the ongoing transgender bathroom controversy, and much more. Here are some standout moments from the interview.

  • On the Black Lives Matter movement: "The movement is bigger than any one person or organization...what we saw in Ferguson is that people used social media as a way to organize in new ways."
  • On Beyoncé's Super Bowl performance being "anti-police": "Beyoncé will survive these boycotts, and I'm hopeful that her image and what she's done will help other entertainers to say, 'I can use my art to talk about this stuff.' I think people are threatened by the power of Beyoncé. She has this edible platform and she did this at the Super Bowl of all places... she's withstood it and I'm hopeful that it'll be a powerful model for other entertainers."
  • On the presidential candidates: "I think that Bernie has importantly covered a set of issues about race that we've not seen a presidential candidate cover before, and I think that the movement and the coverage pushed him to do that. Hillary was slow to cover anything... but her plans are a little more concrete than Bernie's. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Trump. I think that he'll implode at some point."

This isn't the first time McKesson has hit up a popular rap radio show recently. He also made an appearance on Ebro in the Morning back in March.
