Pass The Popcorn: Justin Simien's 'Dear White People' Is Being Flipped Into A Netflix Original Series

Well, it appears that Justin Simien's cult comedy classic, Dear White People, will be hitting the little screen in a whole new way. According to Variety, the show has been picked up to series as a Netflix original, ordering a 10-episode pilot season, slated to debut in 2017. Details are rather slim at the moment, but it's said that Lionsgate Television will produce the show, with Devon ShepardStephanie Allain Bray and Julia Lebedev all serving as executive producers.

Dear White People began as a trailer that Simien funded with a tax refund in 2012, taking shape as a full-length feature film via crowdfunding, going on to win big at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, winning the U .S. dramatic special jury award for breakthrough talent. There's no word on whether the series will pick up where the film left off or whether any of the film's cast will play a part in its Netflix resurrection, but we can always hope. And personally, I've always thought the film would be better served as an episodic series in any case. Keep your ear to the ground for more on the Netflix treatment of Dear White People in the months ahead.
