Dave Chappelle Was Set To Revive His Rick James Sketch For SNL, Then Trump Won The Election
Last week, Neal Brennan's new special, 3 Mics, went live on Netflix. It's a brilliant multitiered one-man-show that speaks directly to an uncommon source of laughs: mental health. If you haven't seen it yet, please do. But while you're at it, we suggest putting an ear to Brennan's recent interview with WNYC, where he dives deep into his new special, and reveals that he was a writer on the Saturday Night Live debut of his former partner-in-crime, Dave Chappelle.
What's more, Brennan spoke to just how close we were to seeing Chappelle's infamous Rick James sketch revived on live television. He claims that on the evening of the election, he and Michael Che wrote a sketch that would have brought James back from the grave to express his gratitude for not having to live in a Trump world. The sketch was written at around 9pm on Election Night. Then the unthinkable happened: an actual Trump victory. The sketch was then scrapped in favor of one that is arguably more memorable: Chappelle and Chris Rock watching the election night trauma unfold amongst a room-full of white liberals.
Brennan goes on to speak on the prospect of a Chappelle's Show reboot, stating that chances of that ever materializing were "incredibly slim." Listen to the full interview below.
