Okayplayer is proud to have again partnered with the good people of City Parks Foundation to co-present one of their many great shows this summer concert season. Join us on Saturday, June 11, from 2:00pm to 7:00pm in Central Park to hear the melodies of Cymande, KING, Deva Mahal and DJ Parler.
For those unfamiliar with this quartet of cool, the legacies associated with these talents are rooted in music history and continue to have bright spots ahead of them.
British funk pioneers Cymande reunited in 2011 with original members Sam Kelly, Patrick Patterson, Steve Scipio, Pablo Gonzales, Mike Rose and Derrick Gibbs and released a critically acclaimed album in 2015: A Simple Act of Faith (which was recorded with their original producer, John Schroeder). Now, this summer they are touring the US for the first time since 1973.
KING, an act we introduced as our first First Look Friday four years ago, will bring their debut album out for a new audience to hear.. Twin sisters Paris and Amber Strother alongside Anita Bias are co-signed by the late, great Prince and legend Stevie Wonder. Together, they are an eclectic trio who will add another notch to their performance roster with a renowned live performance.
Following that level of intrigue and cool is Deva Mahal, a powerful vocalist and songwriter who co-wrote “Never Let You Go in 2009. The daughter of Taj Mahal, a Grammy nominated legend, Deva has become renowned throughout the world for her energetic live shows + rich harmonies. If there isn’t anyone else on this bill you should check out, it is certainly her.
Last, but certainly not least is New York turntablist, DJ Parler. This Gothamite master of the 1’s and 2’s has performed all over the world from London to the Bay. With an eclectic style and a proven ability to move the crowd, DJ Parler heads to Central Park to take music lovers on a musical journey that ranges from Golden Era hip-hop to soul to rare grooves to funky breaks. The producer of the acclaimed SAMPLOLOGY Mixtape Series has dropped a special edition Memorial Day Mixtape that is part Cymande “Samplology” and part BBQ vibes.
Don’t worry about copping tickets as the event is free. Doors open at 2:00pm with the show promptly beginning at 3:00pm. New York City, Connecticut, New Jersey, please stand up and take notice that the weather has been a consistent 70-to-80 degrees now!
