Senator Cory Booker Introduces a Bill to Legalize Marijuana Nationwide

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker has introduced a bill that would legalize marijuana federally; the same bill would also encourage states to legalize the drug.

The bill is called the Marijuana Justice Act, and the prospects of the bill actually passing is slim, considering that republicans currently control congress and President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions have antiquated views on drugs.

However, the dim prospects didn't stop the Democrat from releasing a passionate video on his Facebook. In the video, Booker broke down why a bill like this is vital, pointing out the billions in wasted money and the the fact that the prisons are disproportionately filled with brown and black people:

You see these marijuana arrests happening so much in our country, targeting certain communities poor communities, minority communities targeting people with an illness.

Booker has been making the rounds in support of his bill. In an interview with NBC News he brought he brought up another positive if this bill passed: legalizing weed can help curve the opioid epidemic.

Booker told NBC News:

"I've seen a lot of very compelling preliminary data that shows there is a drop in opioid overdoses in areas that have better access to marijuana,"
