Another day, another Smollett investigation.

Just when we thought the book had been closed on the Jussie Smollett saga, a new chapter has opened.

On Friday, a Chicago judge appointed a special prosecutor to investigate a Cook County prosecutor's decision to drop all charges against the Empire actor who was accused of orchestrating his own racist and homophobic attack in January.

According to Billboard, Judge Michael Toomin made the appointment, citing his suspicion that state's attorney, Kim Foxx, had mishandled the investigation when she recused herself and appointed an aide from her own office to oversee the case. For her part, Foxx claimed to have appointed the aide to prevent any conflict of interests, as she had been in touch with members of Smollett's family throughout the investigation.

In the weeks following the dismissal of charges against Smollett, the city of Chicago filed suit against the actor, seeking to recover thousands spent on the investigation. Smollett is also the subject of a defamation suit by the brothers that alleged they were paid by Smollett to assist in staging the attack.

Smollett has yet to offer a statement on the latest phase of his unending legal bouts with persons and districts involved with his alleged attack. Stay tuned for updates in the weeks ahead.
