'Charged: The DA vs. Black America' Explores The Criminal Injustice System

BET is presenting a new look at the criminal justice system and how it has effected the black community in a new documentary titled Charged: The DA vs. Black America.

The documentary switches gears on the subject of police brutality, racism, and white supremacy by focusing on district attorneys rather than police officers and the power they wield in sending scores of black and brown people to prison. The United States imprisons more people than any other country in the world (despite not being the most populous country) and black people are disproportionately represented in the statistics of those that are incarnated.

The documentary is pegged to BET's “Truth Series,” a series of original documentaries that examines the black experience. The cities examined are New Orleans, Baltimore and Milwaukee. District attorney Marilyn Mosby, who entered the national spotlight during the case of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old Baltimore man who died from injuries sustained during a violent car ride in a police van, is featured prominently in the doc. Also, Black Thought of the legendary Roots crew serves as the project's narrator, which is being produced by NBC News’ Peacock Productions. Shoshana Guy is the senior producer of the documentary while Knute Walker is the executive producer and Sharon Scott is the president and general manager.

Charged: The DA vs. Black America will air on November 7 at 9 p.m. ET on BET. In the meantime, press play and watch the trailer via YouTube below.
