Chance the Rapper has sued his former manager Pat Corocan for over $3 million dollars.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the rapper accused Corocan of exploiting his role by finessing business opportunities to his own companies. The lawsuit also alleges that he tarnished Chance’s image.
Filed on February 20 in Cook County court, the suit arrives two months after Corocan’s company sued the rapper’s businesses. We previously reported that the former manager claimed he was owed $2.5 million of unreimbursed expenses. Corocan sought damages for negotiating partnerships for Chance such as an Apple Music deal for the release of the 2016 mixtape Coloring Book.
Corocan’s lawsuit filed in December also shed light on their tarnished relationship. “Undisciplined studio sessions” and a demanding album rollout led to fans being disappointed with The Big Day. Additionally, it alleged the album’s follow-up tour had to be cancelled due to lackluster sales. Corocan claims Chance blames him for the album’s poor performance. He was fired in April 2020 and says he was owed $3 million, 15% of the artist’s net income.
Chance’s complaint accuses Corocan of using his relationship to benefit his personal businesses and negotiate deals. Corocan is called a “marginally competent business manager” at best and is described as a “bullying and abrasive self-promoter” in the filing.
Accusations presented in the suit include an allegation that Corocan “effectively sabotaged” a deal with music distributor UnitedMasters and also persuaded Live Nation to buy wine from his No Fine Print company for concerts. The suit claims, “[Chance] had no idea at the time he agreed to work with Live Nation that Mr. Corocan had used his connection to Mr. Bennett to promote Mr. Corocan’s separate business interests.”
An additional accusation calls out Corocan for mishandling the artist’s merchandise business. Chance said it cost him more than $1 million to issue refunds. Beyond this, he also alleges Corocan did not create a marketing plan for The Big Day album.
Chance the Rapper is seeking to dismiss various counts. He’s requesting more than $1 million for each of the three counts described in his own suit.
