Only several weeks after the fatal shooting of Stephon Clark by Sacramento police, another California man has been killed by police officers.

Diante Yarber, 26, was shot and killed inside his car at a Walmart parking lot by police in Barstow, a city two hours outside of Los Angeles. In a report from The Guardian, police officers fired what sounded like more than 30 shots at the car, which not only killed Yarber but injured a young woman that was with him.

Police said that Yarber was "wanted for questioning" in a stolen vehicle case and that he "accelerated" the car toward officers when they tried to stop him. Following the incident, police labeled the shooting an "assault" on an officer. However, his family and their attorney argued that he wasn't a threat and shouldn't have been treated as a suspect in the first place.

"The police took him away for no reason," Brittany Chandler, the mother of Yarber's 19-month-old daughter, Leilani, said. "The police should be held accountable for this…They are sick people for them to be able to shoot someone down in broad daylight."

An investigation conducted after the incident revealed that Yarber was unarmed and "not in the path" of the cops, contradicting initial statements made by police.

"They saw a car full of black people sitting in front of a Walmart, and they decided that was suspicious," Lee Merritt, an attorney for the family, said. "They just began pouring bullets…It's irresponsible. It's dangerous. It's mind-boggling, the use of force."

The officers involved with the shooting are on paid administrative leave.
