Bun B, ehem, Professor Bun B and his partner in teaching excellence Dr. Anthony Pinn took to Ebro In The Morning yesterday to discuss their joint teaching venture at (where else?) Houston’s Rice University. Prof A & B are heading a class that examines Hip-Hop, Religion and the copious ways the two institutions intersect and influence one another both socially and culturally, and for the life of me, I can’t think of a better fitting duo of candidates for the job. After breaking down their syllabus and explaining how high of a demand they’re dealing with in terms of course enrollment, the profs began to widen the discourse, really pulling in Ebro and Rosenberg. The discussion touches on the overarching themes of the course, how it is structured, eventually digressing into an analysis of Christianity in hip-hop, gospel rap, church trap or whatever you want to call it. It’s a fascinating conversation that analyzes hip-hop’s deeply embedded homophobia and it’s roots in the church, the diminishment of the feminist voice and so much more. Seriously, if you’ve got 30 minutes today, you owe yourself a listen.
