Roots Picnic 2020 Was Almost One Of The Last Physical Roots Performances At The Festival

Black Thought said that the planned Roots Picnic performance "may have been our swan song as performers in the festival."

The Roots have been an integral part of the annual Roots Picnic, considering that it is their music festival. But according to Black Thought, this year's festival would've possibly seen the group performing as part of the event for one of the last times.

In a new interview with Vulture, Thought spoke on still being able to have the annual music festival happen as a virtual concert experience, and revealed how The Roots were planning on this being one of their last performances for the event.

"It was possibly going to be one of our last physical performances at the festival as the Roots; we’ve done it for many years, and this may have been our swan song as performers in the festival," the rapper said. "We were really looking forward to it."

"Having to cancel the festival … it hurt for all parties involved," he continued. "But then we were able to flip it and link up with Michelle Obama’s camp and When We All Vote and change it into a [digital] voting initiative for young people. It served as a template for how you could still freak something in these times."

This year's Roots Picnic was supposed to feature The Roots performing alongside Musiq Soulchild, SWV, and Brandy, as well as performances from Thundercat, Dababy, Burna Boy, Meek Mill, and others.

Thought recently released his the latest entry in his Streams of Thought series, Streams of Thought, Vol. 3: Cane & Able. The album was produced by Sean C.
