Black Protestor James Scurlock Reportedly Killed by White Bar Owner in Omaha

Scurlock's father shared, "Last night, I lost a son. My kids lost a brother. His daughter lost a father. All because he decided to protest against racism."

James Scurlock, a 22-year-old black man was fatally shot while protesting outside a bar, The Hive in Omaha, Nebraska. According to the Daily Beast, the white bar owner is reportedly in custody in relation to the shooting.

Scurlock’s father James is calling for justice as Omaha and other cities nationwide have taken to the streets to protest and raise awareness of police brutality and violence including the recent death of George Floyd in Minnesota. 

"Last night, I lost a son," he said. "My kids lost a brother. His daughter lost a father. All because he decided to protest against racism. There’s a lot of speculation and rumors about how this happened. I don’t really care to be honest. My family wants closure and peace. ... What we want is for this to go to court and get a full prosecution." 

Following the shooting, police confirmed a suspect was in custody but his name was unreleased. The Omaha World-Herald identified him as Jake Gardner, he is reportedly an owner of two bars —The Hive and The Gatsby.

Gardner is a former Marine who was deployed to Iraq and Haiti, according to the Daily Beast. He was also a volunteer for Donald Trump in 2016.

Police did not provide a statement on the motive behind the shooting. Douglas County Attorney’s released the following statement, “Investigators are in the process of reviewing all collected evidence, video, witness interviews and conferring with the Douglas County Attorney’s office.” 

A BuzzFeed News report alleges Gardner, the alleged shooter yelled racial slurs before shooting.
