Last night Black-ishaired an episode that took the 2016 presidential election head on, providing one of the most compelling and poignant scenes to be shot in the series so far.

The scene comes right as Andre “Dre” Johnson (Anthony Anderson) and his coworkers are engaged in an discussion about the election, and how Lucy (Catherine Reitman) voted for President-elect Donald Trump. Dre let's out a laugh, resulting in two of the coworkers turning their attention to him.

"Why do you not care about what's happening to our country," Leslie Stevens (Peter Mackenzie) asks. "You don't think I care about this country," Dre responds before offering a monologue that is part tribute to black people across America, and part critique of the ways in which the country needs to be better.

"I love this country, even though at times it doesn't love me back. For my whole life, my parents, my grandparents, me, for most black people, this system has never worked for us. But we still played ball. Tried to do my best to live by the rules, even though we knew they would never work out in our favor."

As Dre speaks, a montage of different photos showing everything from segregation to black people voting, are sequenced to the tune of "Strange Fruit."

"I love this country as much if not more than you do and don't you ever forget that," Dre concludes before walking away from the group.

Previews released earlier this week for the episode foreshadowed the seriousness with which Black-ish would handle the forthcoming Trump presidency.

One such teaser trailer featured Daphne Lido (Wanda Sykes) discussing how Hillary Clinton could have been the first female president of the United States, but over 50 percent of white women chose to vote for Donald Trump instead. Ultimately, the conversation results in Lucy confessing that she voted for Trump, which sends the group of workers into an uproar.
