Bill Cosby is set to be released from prison on Wednesday, according to a report his sexual assault conviction has been overturned.
The AP reports Pennsylvania’s highest court overturned his sex assault conviction “after finding an agreement with a previous prosecutor prevented him from being charged in a case.” The defamed comedian has served nearly three years of a three to 10-year state prison sentence.
Before his career was tarnished he was viewed as a respectable figure due to playing the titular character on the long-running series The Cosby Show. He was previously convicted of drugging and molesting a Temple University employee at his home. In 2015, he was charged, unsealed evidence was also brought forward, a deposition from the woman’s lawsuit. He was later arrested days before the 12-year statute of limitations expired.
A few months back, in May, Cosby was denied parole for refusing to participate in sex offender programs. Alongside dismissing all allegations as untrue, he also has previously stated he will serve his full 10-year sentence rather than acknowledge wrongdoing.
2021 was the first year Cosby was eligible for parole under the sentence he received after his 2018 conviction. Accusers who came forward noted the former Hollywood star would lure them to his home as they were under the belief he would assist them with furthering their careers. Instead, he took advantage of countless victims and sexually assaulted numerous victims.
Formerly seen as a leader of the Black community, Cosby has fallen from grace in his later years. Prior to his conviction, his social commentary was viewed as inflammatory to many African-Americans. But, still, he appeared to be re-booting his career which spanned 50 years.
