Beyoncé and JAY-Z To Receive 2019 GLAAD Media Vanguard Award

The award is given to allies who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people.

GLAAD has just announced that their Vanguard Award at the upcoming 30th annual GLAAD Media Awards will be presented to Beyoncé and JAY-Z.

According to Deadline, the award is for “allies who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people.” Previous winners included Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Cher, Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, and Jennifer Aniston.

GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said called Bey and Jay “global icons and passionate defenders of human rights and acceptance for all people,” in a press statement, adding, "When Beyoncé and JAY-Z speak, the world becomes inspired and when it comes to LGBTQ people, their voices of acceptance have been heard loud and clear. We could not be prouder to stand with them to send a message of love during the biggest LGBTQ event in the world and to honor their work to bend the arc of justice forward for LGBTQ people, people of color, and marginalized communities everywhere.”

This will be JAY-Z’s second year in a row receiving GLAAD Media Award. Last year, he received a Special Recognition Award for his song “Smile” off 4:44, which was based on his mother being a lesbian. Gloria Carter accepted the award and delivered a speech at the 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2018.

GLAAD Media Awards are slated to start being handed out on March 28 in Los Angeles and the ceremony is set to take place on May 4 in New York.
