A Teddy Pendergrass Documentary Is In The Works

A documentary on the one and only Teddy Pendergrass is in the works.

In a report from Variety, BBC Films will co-finance a film on the life and artistry of Teddy Pendergrass, titled Pendergrass. The movie will be directed and produced by Olivia Lichtenstein; Piers Tempest and Ian Flooks will also serve as producers for the project.

"Everyone knows his voice, but all too many have forgotten the extraordinary story of the man behind it, his unique contribution to the history of popular music and his courageous triumph over adversity," Lichtenstein said.

The film will feature interviews with Pendergrass' family and friends, as well as industry legends, including Stevie Wonder, and rarely seen archival footage.

The documentary will surely have a lot to work with. Pendergrass was a versatile and singer-songwriter, whose music explored disco, funk, soul and R&B. Upon achieving worldwide acclaim as the frontman of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, he embarked on a solo career and ultimately became the first black male singer to record five consecutive multi-platinum albums in the United States.

However, Pendergass was left paralyzed at the age of 31 after a car accident in 1982, with the incident pausing his career up until 1985, when he made his triumphant return during a Live Aid concert in Philadelphia. Pendergrass passed away at the age of 59 in 2010.

Pendergrass is set to begin production in April.

Recently, news was announced that a second Prince documentary was in the works. Titled Prince: Pop Life, the film will be presented as a road trip, with prominent locations being Paris, Los Angeles and New York (and hopefully the city Prince represented until his death, Minneapolis). Through the journey viewers will not only get a glimpse at the Purple One’s artistic persona through his fans and artists that he influenced (as well as artists that influenced him), but also his personal life. The documentary will also utilize animated segments too.
