Dre Harris was attacked by a group of white supremacists in a parking garage after Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency because the violence surrounding the “Unite The Right” rally.
Harris recounted the incident on a GoFundMe page:
I was brutally attacked by white supremacists in the parking garage right beside the Charlottesville Police Station. I was chased and beat with metal poles. I was knocked unconscious repeatedly. Every time I went to stand up I was knocked back down…I was diagnosed with a concussion, an ulnar fracture, and had to receive eight staples in my head. I also have a laceration across my right eyebrow, abrasions on my knees & elbows, and a chipped tooth.
In a report from The Root, the 20-year-old Harris moved from Suffolk to Charlottesville two years ago, to work as an assistant at a local high school’s special education program. He and a group of friends were protesting against the rally.
“Me and about five of my friends were out protesting,” Harris said. “We thought [the white supremacists] left, but at one point they came back. Everyone was exchanging words with the group, but then the KKK and white supremacists just rushed us.”
Harris is planning on pressing charges, and his mother is working with photographer Zach D. Roberts (who took a picture of the group of men who attacked Harris) to identify her son’s attackers.
