Tomorrow night, October 10th, the BET Hip-Hop Awards will hit the air for the annual transmission and celebration.

This means we can expect precisely two debates to take place in the days to come. The first, what exactly BET considers to be hip-hop. The second, whether they’re accurate in their assessment. One thing we won’t have to fight over, is the general quality of this year’s cypher. Though it’s unfortunate the network chose the Hassidic wedding approach of separating the men and women (likely an effort to save the egos of “heavyweights”) they did wrangle some of the best emcees regardless of gender for at least this cypher, lead by NYC’s Leikeli47, and emboldened by verses from Jacksonville’s Tokyo Jetz, Detroit’s Kash Doll and a closing performance from Rapsody, whose new album Leila’s Wisdom has garnered high praise from critics and pedestrians alike. This is not the newly-inked Roc Nation artist’s first run at The Cypher, having performed with Emis Killa, Rittz and Jon Connor back in 2013.
