Questlove‘s daily dispatch returned last night with a touching tribute to the late Bill Withers.
Visibly shaken from the news, Questo pulled it together for a choice four-hour DJ set, spinning rare and celebrated live takes, covers, and hip-hop classics that repurposed Withers’ timeless songwriting standards. Throughout the set, The Roots drummer chimes in with personal accounts of studying Withers’s songbook and live performances, noting how before he ever memorized a song, he’d learned Withers’ “Grandma’s Hands” monologue from the legendary Live at Carnegie Hall performance.
Watch Questlove celebrate the legacy of Bill Withers in his latest late-night DJ set below. The commemoration follows recent salutes to Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and the Native Tongues collective. And there’s a good chance we’ll get another career-honoring sequence in the days ahead. Tune in to find out who’s on deck.
