After delivering an instant hit with their debut single, Silk Sonic is back.
The duo, a retro-soul-leaning passion project from Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, returned last night with a follow-up that could very well join “Leave The Door Open” as a mid-summer smash. The group’s latest single, “Skate,” is tailor-fit for the roller disco revival (which is well underway,) and it arrives with a properly sunny visual treatment. A feelgood clip with plenty of seasonal appeal, the video centers on a backyard band configuration of Silk Sonic with .Paak sitting behind the kit and Mars handling percussion as they duet the upbeat cut and dancers coordinate a routine on wheels.
Silk Sonic introduced first themselves at the top of the year with a slow-burning ballad (which earned .Paak his first Billboard No. 1,) promising a full album in due time. And they’re certainly milking it. Following a few performances on the awards show circuit, their latest single lands just a couple of weeks after unveiling a remix for “Leave The Door Open,” featuring an even-paced verse from Wu-Tang Clan‘s Ghostface Killah. As a brief placeholder, the duo also released a jingle for Mars’ rum company, SelvaRey. And while there’s no telling when a proper album release will be announced, it does appear one is on the way.
