Upcoming Sly Stone Documentary Chronicles The Legend’s Battle for Streaming Royalties

Dance to the Streaming Music arrives in 2019

After a decade of working alongside Sly Stone on an intimate documentary feature, filmmaker, Brady Spensor, will finally see the fruits of his labor hit the big screen next year.

According to Deadline, Spensor’s upcoming film, Dance to The Streaming Music, will not only delve in the impossible impact of the soul icon and his legacy, but also underscores the restorative powers of the Music Modernization Act, which went into effect in October and has already secured a steady line of residual income for Stone, after 10 years of fighting to claim streaming royalties. Spensor’s project follows the 2017 Sly Stone documentary, On the Sly: In Search of the Family Stone.

Stone offered a few words on the project in a statement to Deadline: “When I was big enough to reach the piano, I thought that everybody had to do it in the world. This documentary is a chance to share my story with all the wide-eyed dreamers.” Up until a 2016 settlement that awarded him $5 million in uncollected royalties, Stone was reportedly homeless and living out of a van.

No date has been set for the release of the film, but we’ll have our ear to the ground for updates in the weeks to come.
