Topaz Jones Shares New Single "Herringbone" From Sundance-Winning Album/Film

Topaz Jones' new album is also an award-winning short film.

On Friday, New Jersey-bred artist Topaz Jones announced his new album, Don't Go Tellin' Your Momma. Additionally, he released the first single, "Herringbone," and revealed the album would be released alongside a short film of the same name. The film was recently screened at Sundance, where it won the Short Film Jury Award for non-fiction film.

"The film is all the things I couldn't say in musical notes," Jones said in a press release. "The music is everything I couldn't write in words, even though there's lyrics that speak to it as well, but emotionally, it's everything I couldn't necessarily write down and the film is everything that I couldn't put in song. It is single-handedly the most gratifying, fulfilling experience I've had as an artist."

Watch the official trailer for Don't Go Tellin' Your Momma below. At the moment, the release date for the accompanying album has yet to be announced.

In a release, Jones described the new project as a "personal interrogation of his own identity...[distilling] his childhood experiences into a vibrant world that powerfully illustrates his account of the Black experience growing up in America."

The album, described as a "rich infusion of funk, soul and hip-hop," was recorded in the Pocono Mountains "with an extended cast of collaborators and musicians." The movie was written and directed by Jones, with assistance from creative duo rubberband and cinematographer Chayse Irvin, who served as director of photography. Irvin is known for his work on Beyonce's Lemonade.
