In regards to Ike, Turner briefly spoke about him and explained why she has never revealed the full extent of his abuse.
“I think I’m ashamed,” she said. “I feel I told enough.”
Elsewhere in the story, Turner recalled a moment where she watched Tina, a musical centered around her life, make its debut in London. During the curtain call for the performance, she walked onstage and told the actor portraying Ike, “I forgive you,” which some interpreted as her forgiving Ike himself.
She clarified that she hadn’t forgiven Ike before adding: “I don’t know if I could ever forgive all that Ike ever did to me but Ike’s dead. So we don’t have to worry about him.”
Turner also spoke about how she views herself amid being seen by fans as a symbol of sex appeal, resilience, and empowerment, as well as the idea of looking at her life in the era of the #MeToo movement.
“I identify only with my life,” she said. “I was busy doing it. Doing the work.”
“I don’t necessarily want to be a ‘strong’ person,” she continued. “I had a terrible life. I just kept going. You just keep going, and you hope that something will come.”
Tina had previously said she had forgiven Ike in an interview with The Times of London. Ike died in 2007 of a cocaine overdose.
