The Weeknd is fighting for the trademark to the name of his Grammy-winning album, Starboy.
The Weeknd‘s legal team has filed court documents opposing real-estate agent Eymun Talasazan‘s attempt to trademark “Starboy.”
According to documents obtained by TMZ, Eymun filed the “Starboy” trademark, for use on TV projects shortly after the Weeknd’s 2016 hit single and album by the same name was released. Just eleven days after The Weeknd and Marvel Comics announced a “Starboy” comic book slated for a June release, Eymun filed another trademark for comic books.
Eymun’s motive for this trademark seems to be in line with his past shady attempts of trademarking other musicians’ popular taglines. He previously filed trademarks for “Straight Outta Bombton” after the release of NWA biopic “Straight Outta Compton,” and “Runnin’ Through the 6” after a Drake release.
The Weeknd’s legal battle to secure the rights to “Starboy” leaves some wondering if this will affect Wizkid— arguably the biggest African act in the world right now— whose famous monicker is also “Starboy.” The Nigerian singer has been using the name since he launched Starboy Entertainment back in 2013.
But Wizkid doesn’t seem all too protective of “Starboy” as an entity. When asked his thoughts on The Weeknd releasing an album of the same name back in 2016, he responded with, “Everybody a Star!”
