Biggie and Tupac Murder Movie 'City of Lies' Finally Has a Release Date

A long-delayed film about the investigation into the murders of Biggie and Tupac is arriving next week after getting pulled from schedule by the LAPD in 2018.

After years of setbacks, City of Lies appears to be finally heading to a screen near you.

According to Billboard, the film, which recreates the true story about the investigation into the murders of The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, is slated to arrive on VOD on March 19th. To announce the new release date, an updated trailer for the film has been released. The clip follows LAPD detective Russell Poole (portrayed by Johnny Depp,) as he tracks down lead after dead-end lead with a journalist (played by Forest Whitaker) aiding his pursuit and questioning his involvement in the 20-year investigation into the rappers' still-unsolved murders.

Directed by Brad Furman and written by Christian Contreras, City of Lies is based on the 2003 book, LAbyrinth: A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the Implication of Death Row Records’ Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal, by veteran journalist, Randall Sullivan. The movie was originally slated for a September 7th, 2018 release (which would have marked the 22nd-anniversary of Tupac's murder), but was postponed in August 2018 for unspecified reasons. However, per Daily Beast report from later in that year, the film was allegedly pulled from the schedule because of the implication of the LAPD in the murders of Biggie and Tupac. City of Lies eventually saw a limited release in Italy and on Blu-ray in 2019. This month's drop will be the film's first nationwide release.
